Additions to the MARC Code Lists for Relators, Sources, Description Conventions
As announced by the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress ( http://www.loc.gov/marc/ ), the following 98 codes have been recently approved for use in MARC 21 records. They include 11 new relator codes, 1 new category code source code, 4 new classification source codes, 4 new subject term source codes, 1 new description conventions code, 43 new national bibliography number source codes (for use in newly-defined field 015 subfield $2), and 34 access method codes (for use in field 856 subfield $2). It should also be noted that all classification source codes are being validated for use in field 852 in bibliographic and holdings records. These new codes will appear in the next printed edition of the MARC Codes Lists for Relators, Sources, Description Conventions but will appear in the online version of the code list immediately ( http://www.loc.gov/marc/relators ). These codes should not be used in exchange records until after December 30, 2001. They will not be actively supplied by LC cataloging staff and may only appear in distributed LC records created via copy cataloging streams.
